I have to admit, I didn't hate this movie, which I expected I would. It was actually pretty good; not a favourite, but good. The beginning was exciting and, as I love the ocean, very aesthetically pleasing for me. I think the way they introduced all the characters was very good and it reminded me a little bit of a play format, especially with how the lines were laid out. As a side note, I thought the script was a little weak. There were times the text wasn't very good, and it felt like something better easily could have been said in that place; but, like with 8 1/2, this could just be because of the translation.
I think this one was pretty well shot. Very quiet, a lot of long gaps with no music and many long shots only with ambient sound and some object in view, but it was still pretty. I loved all the scenery that came into play, especially the ocean. The Italian landscape is so beautiful to me, especially after seeing Call Me By Your Name. Even though it doesn't have any colour, it still feels colourful to me. I can see why it was so popular in Italy at the time also; very scandalous with beautiful actors and well shot. That's all you really need in Italy, from what I've found. I especially thought the scene where like a hundred Italian men were watching Claudia walk along down the street because she was pretty, muttering to themselves with no subtitles needed. Seemed pretty realistic.
Now, for plot. I found the beginning very interesting, and I was very curious about what was going to happen to all the characters, especially Anna, even though she got on my nerves a lot. The middle got a little boring, I feel like this movie could have been better if it were only like an hour and a half or so. I liked the part where the couple argued in the paint store because can you imagine the shopkeeper just watching. He must have been so confused by all this couple drama. I would have loved to see a cut just of his befuddled face, that would have been great. But anyways, the entire middle of the movie was just Claudia being nervous about cheating on her best friend's boyfriend, which is understandable and all, but why did the movie have to spend so much time on it? Anyway, I loved the part with the bells in particular. It was very pretty and nice to listen to. I'd love to do that on a date, but why did that nun just leave them up there all alone? Is that really allowed? That sounds like such a hazard.
Watching this made me want to go to a fancy party like the ones my grandma used to have at her big house. They were pretty fancy and there was always lots of food; this movie made me very nostalgic of that, and I liked it, even if I thought the plot dragged on a little. I thought the end was really lame and underwhelming also, like, why did he even do that? Like he cheated on her and then had the nerve to cry like a wimp? And then why the hell should she forgive him? Oh whatever - the whole thing probably could have been cut a lot shorter without losing any plot, tbh, but I digress. So yeah- it was good, but too long. I don't really feel like I gained anything from watching this movie? Like I wouldn't call it a waste of time, but it wasn't very enjoyable and I didn't learn much, plus it was pretty dull for most of it. Oh well. They were all horrible people. The end.
