I didn’t go into this movie expecting much. I originally only went so I could spend time with my awesome friends from film class last year. I thought it would just be another animated kinda movie with a predictable end and fun plot; but, as always, I underestimated Pixar.
First, the plot was incredible. Pixar has made a lot of amazing movies, and Coco is one of their best. It’s a sweet story about death, family, and music. The music aspect of the plot really resonates with me and my family, and Miguel’s story really struck a chord. The family aspect is also quite similar to part of my life. Sitting in the theater felt very personal and close, and I loved it. Aside from that, the story kept me on the edge of my seat all the time. I felt like a little kid watching a movie again, genuinely entertained and fascinated by how pretty the animation was and hoping to god for a happy ending. This film was completely satisfying and I walked out of it feeling really refreshed and new.
The animation is stunning. The colors and the lights used were just amazing for the whole thing, especially in the world of the dead. It makes death so fantastical and beautiful, and I actually learned so much about Dia de los Muertos that I never knew. I loved the way they animated the skeletons also, so they were somewhat unsettling but still friendly-looking. At first, they freaked me out a little bit, but as I got used to it and got to know all the characters, I came to love it.
It’s been so long since a movie made me feel so happy and little again. I definitely recommend seeing this movie; especially if you’re a musician.
Warnings for Coco: None. It’s just so sweet.
