I was honestly very impressed by this movie; I put off watching it for a very long time solely because I didn’t want to be disappointed since the first movie was very close to my heart (and the second was very different than the first). But, to my pleasant surprise, I loved it. And also, the animation really wasn't bad.
I have always been a sucker for mentor-apprentice relationships, reading and writing them. The Cars universe has a lot of that relationship in it; between Doc and McQueen and later McQueen and Cruz, they write it very well. But this time, the stereotype was broken, and it was very strongly highlighted that McQueen and Cruz both learned a lot from each other. When McQueen went up as her pit coach I was actually shook. Like, these are cars, these are automobiles, but I was close to actual tears because I remember when Doc was McQueen’s pit coach in the first movie. It was so fun to see and it just kept surprising me; I loved all the flashbacks with Doc and meeting Smokey, Doc’s mentor, I love that McQueen took on Doc’s old title (but not his colour, it looked SO weird to see Lightning McQueen in blue), and it was awesome to see Cruz become so proud and confident in herself, especially when she joined Dinoco (yes Tex!!!) and took on Doc’s old number, 51.
Say what you will about the Cars universe, I recognize that it has many, many gaping and sometimes alarming problems with logic (why was there a car pope in the second movie? Does that mean there was a car Jesus that died on a cross? Was he kissed by car Judas? Is God a car? Deus ex Machina?), but nonetheless, Cars was a big part of my childhood and it was so amazing to see a cool female character (even though she is a car) executed in a new and creative way, even though I expected much less of it. So I’ll say it again: I was very impressed by Cars 3.
Warnings for Cars 3: Um… not much? They’re cars. Although McQueen’s crash scene was BRUTAL though like I was watching it like “isn’t this a kid’s movie???”
